What size bike to buy for my 5 year old
For most 5-year-olds, start by comparing 14-, 16- and 18-inch bikes. Measure your child first: height and inseam matter more than age.
Which wheel size should you check first?
At age five, three XBikes starting ranges overlap. A 14-inch bike covers heights of 37–45 in (94–114 cm), a 16-inch bike covers 40–48 in (102–122 cm), and an 18-inch bike covers 43–52 in (109–132 cm). These ranges narrow the search, but they do not determine fit by themselves.
| Wheel size | Starting age range | Rider height |
|---|---|---|
| 14 Inch | 3–6 | 37–45 in / 94–114 cm |
| 16 Inch | 4–7 | 40–48 in / 102–122 cm |
| 18 Inch | 5–9 | 43–52 in / 109–132 cm |
A five-year-old who is 41 in tall, for example, falls within both the 14- and 16-inch starting ranges. That does not make the sizes equivalent: compare stand-over clearance, reach, brake control and confidence on each bike. A child measuring 49 in tall is outside the listed 16-inch range and should start by checking an 18-inch bike.
Measure height and inseam
- Height: Have your child stand barefoot against a wall, looking straight ahead. Mark the top of the head and measure from the floor.
- Inseam: With feet slightly apart, place a firm book upright between the legs to represent a saddle. Measure from the floor to the top edge of the book.
Use measured height to choose the wheel sizes worth trying. Use inseam during the in-person fit check: your child needs suitable clearance when standing over the bicycle. Because frame shapes and adjustments can differ, do not infer clearance from wheel diameter alone.
Check the fit on the actual bike
Have your child try the bicycle rather than choosing from age or wheel size alone. Do not buy an oversized bike simply to allow room for growth. While the bike is supported, check that the child can:
- stand over it with practical clearance rather than being pressed against the frame;
- reach the handlebar without stretching, locking the elbows or losing an upright, controlled position;
- turn the handlebar while remaining balanced and in control;
- reach and operate the brakes confidently, where hand-operated controls are present;
- start, stop and put a foot down without panic or a large sideways lean.
If the child fits two starting ranges, choose by control and current confidence—not by the larger number. A hesitant new rider may control a smaller appropriate bike more readily, while a taller, confident rider may fit the larger option. The individual trial decides.
How the supplied catalog option helps
The XJD Girls BMX Bike 12/14/16 Inch with Training Wheels – Pink Blue is listed in 12 Inch, 14 Inch and 16 Inch SKU labels. For a typical five-year-old comparison, its 14- and 16-inch choices align with two relevant starting ranges; the 12-inch range is 34–40 in (86–102 cm) and ages 3–4, so it is generally a comparison only for a particularly short five-year-old whose measurements and actual fit support it.
These particular catalog options help answer the sizing question because one product can be considered at adjacent 14- and 16-inch starting points. It does not offer the 18-inch size that taller five-year-olds may need, so its listed sizes are nearest-size comparison points, not substitutes for an 18-inch bike.
The title’s wording and the product name are not proof of fit. Treat every age range as an initial filter and every SKU label as wheel size information; confirm the selected configuration and fit before purchase.
Before your child rides
Choose a properly fitting bicycle helmet. It should sit level and be secured with its straps according to the helmet manufacturer’s instructions. Recheck the fit rather than assuming an older helmet still fits.
For assembly, maintenance, fastener settings, load limits and component procedures, follow the exact bicycle manual or use a qualified bicycle mechanic. Those details cannot be determined from wheel size.
Your next decision
Measure your five-year-old’s height and inseam today. Compare 14, 16 and—if the child is at least 43 in (109 cm) tall—18 Inch, then have the child try the candidates. Buy only the size on which stand-over clearance, reach, braking and stopping are controlled now.
