What size bike should i get my 13 year old

Most 13-year-olds should start by trying a 24 Inch bike; riders over 60 in / 153 cm should also try a 26 Inch bike. Measure first, then confirm stand-over, reach, braking and confident control on the actual bicycle.

Choose the starting size from height, not age

Age places a 13-year-old within the XBikes 24 Inch starting range, but height gives the more useful first comparison. The relevant XBikes starting points are:

Wheel sizeAge starting pointRider-height starting point
20 InchAges 7–1248–60 in / 122–152 cm
24 InchAges 10–1454–64 in / 137–163 cm
26 InchYouth and adultsOver 60 in / 153 cm

For a measured height of 54–60 in / 137–152 cm, begin with 24 Inch. Above 60 in / 153 cm, compare 24 Inch and 26 Inch on the real bikes because the height ranges meet and overlap. A 20 Inch bike is generally below the age starting point for a 13-year-old, but it can remain a comparison when the rider is no taller than 60 in / 152 cm and needs its more manageable fit. These ranges narrow the search; they do not prove fit.

Take two measurements before shopping

Measure the child without shoes, standing upright against a wall, and record total height. Then measure inseam from the floor to the crotch while the child stands naturally. Use height to select the wheel-size starting point and inseam to assess the actual bicycle’s stand-over space.

Wheel size alone does not determine frame shape, saddle position or reach. Compare the inseam with the bicycle while the rider stands over it. The child should be able to mount, stop and step off without the frame obstructing a quick, controlled exit. If the relationship is unclear, follow the exact product manual or ask a qualified bicycle mechanic to check the fit.

Do the fit check on the actual bike

Have the child try each plausible size rather than ordering solely from an age label. Do not choose an oversized bicycle merely to leave growing room. During the trial, check that the rider can:

  • stand over the bicycle comfortably and get on and off without struggling;
  • sit in a stable riding position without stretching toward the handlebar;
  • turn the handlebar while keeping balanced, relaxed control;
  • reach and operate both brake controls reliably;
  • start, ride slowly, stop and put a foot down with current confidence.

A size is too demanding if the rider must lunge for the controls, becomes unstable during turns or stops, or cannot dismount promptly. A technically matching height range does not override those signs.

How the available XBikes options help

The XJD Kids Beach Cruiser Bicycle, Rear Rack & V-Brakes, Mint Green has 20 Inch, 24 Inch and 26 Inch SKU labels. Those three catalog options make it relevant for comparing the likely size boundaries for a 13-year-old: 24 Inch is the age-based starting point, 20 Inch may help assess a shorter or less-confident rider, and 26 Inch becomes relevant above 60 in / 153 cm. The rear rack, V-brakes and mint-green finish identify the model, but they do not establish fit.

Use these options as sizes to try, not as interchangeable choices. In particular, do not substitute 26 Inch for 24 Inch simply because the child may grow. Confirm that the specific bicycle permits comfortable stand-over, manageable reach and dependable access to its brake controls. For assembly, adjustments, maintenance, load limits, compatibility and torque requirements, follow the exact product manual or use a qualified bicycle mechanic.

Make the final decision

If the rider is 54–60 in / 137–152 cm, try 24 Inch first. If the rider is over 60 in / 153 cm, try both 24 Inch and 26 Inch and select the one the child controls more naturally. Consider 20 Inch only when the measured height remains within 48–60 in / 122–152 cm and the actual fit is more manageable; age alone should not force a larger choice.

Before riding, add a bicycle helmet that fits properly, sits level and has its straps used according to the helmet manufacturer’s instructions. The decision is complete only when the 13-year-old can stand over, reach, brake, turn, stop and dismount confidently on the chosen bike.
