What kind of bike should i buy for my child
Buy the smallest wheel size that fits your child now—not one to grow into. Measure height and inseam, then confirm stand-over clearance, reach, steering and brake control on the actual bike.
Start with measurements, not age
Measure your child’s height without shoes. For inseam, have them stand against a wall with their feet slightly apart, place a book firmly between their legs, and measure from the floor to the book’s top edge. Record both measurements before comparing bicycles.
Use height to choose a starting wheel size from the XBikes ranges below. Age can narrow the search, but overlapping ranges make it less reliable than the child’s measurements and an individual fit check.
| Wheel size | Starting age | Rider height |
|---|---|---|
| 12 Inch | 3–4 | 34–40 in / 86–102 cm |
| 14 Inch | 3–6 | 37–45 in / 94–114 cm |
| 16 Inch | 4–7 | 40–48 in / 102–122 cm |
| 18 Inch | 5–9 | 43–52 in / 109–132 cm |
| 20 Inch | 7–12 | 48–60 in / 122–152 cm |
| 24 Inch | 10–14 | 54–64 in / 137–163 cm |
| 26 Inch | Youth and adults | Over 60 in / 153 cm |
Check the fit on the actual bicycle
When two sizes overlap, do not automatically choose the larger one. HealthyChildren guidance recommends having the child try the bicycle and avoiding an oversized bike bought for future growth. The right choice is the one the rider can control confidently today.
- Stand-over: Ask the child to straddle the bicycle with both feet flat on the ground. Confirm that they are not forced onto tiptoes or pressed against the frame.
- Starting and stopping: They should be able to get into a riding position and return a foot to the ground without struggling.
- Reach and steering: Check that they can hold the handlebar, turn it smoothly and look ahead without stretching or becoming cramped.
- Brake control: If the bicycle has hand brakes, the child must be able to reach and operate them while keeping control of the handlebar.
- Confidence: Watch for tense shoulders, wobbling caused by overreaching or fear when stopping. A size-chart match does not override what you observe.
Decide what kind of riding they will do
After establishing a fitting wheel size, compare bicycle categories. A training-wheel bike is relevant to a child who currently needs that form of support. A kids’ BMX bike is a category option to compare when that style is preferred. A beach cruiser is another category choice, particularly among the larger sizes represented here. Category and appearance should never outweigh fit or control.
The three supplied catalog options make the decision concrete: two cover 12, 14 and 16 Inch labels in different categories, while one covers 20, 24 and 26 Inch labels. They help you compare only after measurements identify the appropriate starting size.

How the XBikes options compare
Smaller-wheel starting points
XJD Light Purple Girls Bike with Basket, Training Wheels, 12/14/16/20 Inch is listed under Training Wheel Bikes. Its supplied available SKU labels are 12 Inch, 14 Inch and 16 Inch, so compare only those currently listed options despite the broader size wording in the exact product title.
XJD Girls BMX Bike 12/14/16 Inch with Training Wheels – Pink Blue is listed under Kids’ BMX Bikes, with supplied available SKU labels of 12 Inch, 14 Inch and 16 Inch. Compare it with the training-wheel category option only after confirming which of those sizes fits.
Larger-wheel starting points
XJD Kids Beach Cruiser Bicycle, Rear Rack & V-Brakes, Mint Green is listed under Beach Cruiser Bikes. Its supplied available SKU labels are 20 Inch, 24 Inch and 26 Inch. Because it has V-brakes, the child must demonstrate comfortable brake reach and control on the actual bicycle.
None of these products has an available 18 Inch SKU label. If your measurements point to 18 Inch, the listed products are nearest-size comparison points, not substitutes; a 16 Inch or 20 Inch bicycle is not equivalent to an 18 Inch bicycle.
Complete the safety and setup check
Choose a bicycle helmet that fits properly, sits level and has straps adjusted according to the helmet manufacturer’s instructions, consistent with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidance. Recheck helmet fit whenever it is worn.
For assembly, maintenance, torque settings, load limits or compatibility, follow the exact bicycle’s manual or use a qualified bicycle mechanic. Do not guess at an adjustment simply because two models share a wheel-size label.
Make the buying decision
Measure height and inseam, select the chart’s starting size, and have your child try that size and any overlapping candidate. Buy only when they can stand over the bicycle, reach comfortably, steer, stop and operate its brakes with present confidence. Then choose among the relevant training-wheel, BMX or beach-cruiser catalog options—never a larger bicycle solely for future growth.
